Eva Marton as Gertrudis at 130th Anniversary Gala

Hungarian State Opera 130

The inauguration of the Hungarian State Opera (Budapest) was on 27 September 1884 at 7. p.m. in the presence of Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

The building, which is a masterwork of the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl, is going to be “reinaugurated” in the memorial year of the State Opera and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ybl: the inaugural march and ceremony are reconstructed and replayed by the research of Márton Karczag, the head of the Hungarian State Opera Archive and Nóra Wellmann theatre historian. The king’s escort arrives from Buda Castle and the cabinet members under the Prime Minister Kálmán Tisza wait them with the architect Ybl. The gazing, staring crowd breaks into the State Opera’s aula.

The festive programme follows the original opening ceremony organized 130 years ago – then there is a screw. We need enterprising voluntary “walking gentlemen”, who take part in this historic play. The “walking gentlemen” can visit the festive gala performance free of charge.
